What is SMiShing?

Visit Onguard Online for practical tips from the federal government and the technology industry to guard against fraud and protect your personal information.

If You Become A Victim of Phishing or SMiShing Scams:

If you think you have been scammed, you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) through the Internet at  www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/ or by calling 1-877-ID THEFT (1-877-438-4338).

If you have responded to an e-mail or text message that you suspect may be fraudulent contact your bank immediately so they can protect your account(s) that may have been compromised. You will probably want to close the account(s) and open a new one(s).

If you shared your Social Security Number, you should also notify the three major credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

SECURITY TIPS

Be wary of checks from unknown parties.

Have you ever received an offer involving a large check to be deposited into your account with instructions to wire some of that money back, perhaps to someone from another country? If you follow those instructions, you may end up owing thousands of dollars to your financial institution. Be wary of checks from unknown parties.

How to protect yourself:

Bring the check and instructions to your financial institution and ask if they can help you determine the validity of the check you received.
